The saga sequels suffered terribly under Disney because they didn't put someone at the helm to replace Lucas. The original trilogy was great because Lucas turned over directorship to others, giving them some free reign, but keeping them on track with his vision. Disney made the fatal mistake of turning over complete control to directors, allowing them to indulge their personal whims with the overall arc of the story. As a result RJ heavily indulged himself with his own whimsy, and then JJ had to spend half the third movie unraveling what had been done. Then as a director JJ too often pays homage & nods to the originals, which a lot of fans dislike; personally I don't mind. It would have been better all around to have JJ steer the overall story arc, since I think he at least realized the weight of the responsibility, with three different directors under him.
But to Disney... it's all about the bottom line I'm afraid.
when the question was originally asked ROS was not out yet and I voted Rogue One, but I wound up liking RofS just as much, or even more. As a ten yr old girl watching ANH in 1977, and ESB, and ROTJ respectively, it was the perfect end for the Skywalker story. I bawled like a baby watching Luke raise his X-Wing out of the water, and there could have been no more perfect ending for Leia, I would have wanted it the same even if Carrie were still alive, the perfect moment was Leia and Ben becoming one with the force at the same time.
Though I will say it was slightly reminiscent of Mara Jade disappearing at the point they finally realized it was Jacen who killed her. Either way though, ROS was perfect for me.
